How to Set Up the Filter in Your Freshwater Aquarium

Setting Up Filter in an Aquarium in San Diego, CA

Owning an aquarium can be an enjoyable and soothing investment. For those seeking to keep their pet fish happy and healthy, a fish tank filter is key. Avoid the stress of pH imbalances with this guide on how to set up a fish tank filter.

Set the Tank Up for Success

Before adding the filtration system, your tank must be set up. Wash all aquarium items such as the gravel, rocks, and ornaments. To wash gravel, put it in a colander over a bucket and add water. Stir, drain, and rinse the gravel until the water stays clear, then add it to the tank. Be careful to not use soap or detergents, as these are highly toxic to fish. Fill your tank about one-third full with room temperature water, adding the appropriate amount of dechlorinator or water conditioner. Once you’ve filled the tank to this level, add decorations to the bottom of the tank. Now fill your tank to the top and add more conditioner, making sure to leave enough space between the top frame and the water level. Next you can focus on your filter.

Assemble the Filter

Before installing your new filter, it’s crucial to assemble it correctly. Most manufacturers will supply the end user with the parts separated. Your filter should come with instructions on how to assemble the whole product. Most people don’t like reading instructions, but it really makes a difference to put the filter together per the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Install the Filter

Over 15 years ago, the most common filtration units were undergravel filters (UGF). These old-school filters will work, but we have found them to be more of a hindrance than a positive type of filter. A hang-on-the-back filter (HOB), or canister filter, is by far the most efficient, as it allows for a higher fish load and healthier water quality. Now that you’ve pinpointed which filter you own, you can begin installing it.

As the name suggests, an undergravel filter requires placing the filter underneath the gravel, making sure it stays in position. Use the instructions to locate and attach the pump airlines and powerhead to the lift tubes before turning the water filtration system on. Don’t turn on the filter unless the tank is filled completely with water.

Hang-on-the-back filters must have a good amount of space behind the tank to hang off the farthest wall. Set the filter on the back side of the wall and tighten it so it doesn’t move around. Pour a cup of the tank water into the spout that touches the water to aid in suction. Turn on the motor to finish installing this filter.
