What’s the Typical Life Span for Fish Living in an Aquarium?
Owning an aquarium with a variety of beautiful fish is a great hobby and fun to watch. Keeping the fish alive and healthy for as long as possible is something everyone with an aquarium should strive to do. There are several things fish owners need to know about how long fish live and the best ways to ensure they live long, healthy lives.
Size & Reproduction Determines Life Span
Typically, larger fish have longer life spans, which is due in part to the fact that most larger fish have larger hearts, which beat slower and produce a slower metabolism. For instance, bettas are smaller fish and live shorter lives than plecos. Reproductive methods are also associated with life spans. Fish that lay eggs, such as tetras, usually live longer than live-bearing types of fish.
Typical Life Span of Fish
Everything from the cleanliness of the water to the general health of the fish when purchased can affect the life span. While several factors can determine the life span of a fish, there are some general guidelines. The following are typical life spans of aquarium fish that are cared for properly:
- Betta – 2-3 years
- Mollie – 4-5 years
- Zebra – 5-6 years
- Catfish – 7-12 years
- Goldfish – 10 years or more
Of course, these are typical life spans, but with loving care they can live a lot longer. At Aquatic Warehouse, we had a betta live over 6 years!\
Choose Good Companions
Two types of fish that are natural enemies shouldn’t be put into an aquarium together. However, sometimes types of fish that are supposedly compatible may not work out so well either. Mollies, plecos, tetras, and guppies are examples of fish that can usually live together without any problems. It’s also important to choose fish that need approximately the same water temperature and pH levels to thrive.
Stick to a Regular Schedule
Like most creatures, fish will be healthier if they’re kept on a regular schedule, which means feedings should occur at approximately the same time each day. It’s also important to keep lights on and off according to a fairly regular schedule as well, so it’s best to use a timer. It may be stressful for some fish to be left in total darkness or exposed to bright light for long periods.
Invest in High-Quality Supplies
Everything from the aquarium you select to items in the tank and the type of fish food given will make a difference in the life of the fish. You’ll also want to select a high-quality heater, thermometer, filter, and other fish tank supplies. However, buying good supplies won’t matter if they’re not maintained correctly. Make sure to clean the fish tank on a regular basis and properly maintain all equipment.
Whether you need an aquarium temperature controller, beneficial bacteria, a filter, or any other important supplies to help your fish live long, healthy lives, you can find what you need at Aquatic Warehouse.
