Can Koi Eat Any of the Same Foods as People?
Koi are omnivorous aquatic species that thrive on a diversity of food. Centuries ago, Asian rice farmers introduced carp to aquaculture paddies because of their omnivorous traits. These fish proved to be voracious eaters of waterborne insects that plagued rice fields, and farmers kept them fed with fruit and vegetables so they wouldn’t end up eating crops. Cross-breeding of Asian carp resulted in the nice color variations of modern koi, which turned out to be omnivorous just like their predecessors. Nutritious food is one of the most essential koi pond supplies. However, in some cases, koi fish can eat many of the things their keepers enjoy, but there are limitations.
The Best Nutrition for Koi
The bags of pellets and—to a lesser effect—flakes you get from aquarium shops typically provide balanced nutrition for your koi as long as they’ve been formulated for garden ponds. Fresh and frozen feed is also highly recommended from time to time, but you cannot go wrong with daily feedings of koi pellets, and this is by far the most highly recommended.
Adequate Human Food for Koi
Should you run out of pellets for your koi, there are various food items you can feed them in the meantime. Simple cereals such as oatmeal and corn flakes are examples of good temporary substitutes. Chopped vegetables and fruits are even better for koi, preferably fresh.
Human Food Koi Shouldn’t Eat
You should generally avoid feeding anything that’s too spicy or overly processed. Corn flakes, oatmeal, and bread are all made with a certain level of processing, but they’re fine for the pond every now and then. On the other hand, flavored potato chips are out of the question because of their high levels of processing. Spicy foods can not only irritate koi but also interfere with the pH of pond water. The same can be said about greasy foods cooked in processed vegetable oil. Think about the foods that are healthy for you because they’ll also be healthy for your koi.
Special Treats for Koi
Pond keepers have figured out that koi prefer some human food items more than others. They seem to love chunks of watermelon without the outside rinds. Small pieces of bananas and plantains will easily become favorites. In other words, koi like a bit of sweetness that isn’t difficult to consume. Koi will happily devour leafy vegetables such as cabbage and lettuce.
