6 Perfect Plants to Add to a Freshwater Fish Aquarium
You know your fish need a great deal of care and attention, which means you should always make sure to give them the best habitat possible. While those cute fish castles and treasure chests offer some color to your tank and possibly a few hiding spots, your fish benefit greatly by just adding a few plants. However, it can be a tricky task to pick out which plants will do well in your tank, which is why we at Aquatic Warehouse put together a list of the best freshwater plants to add to your aquarium.
1. Amazon Sword
Known for its leaves that resemble little swords, the Amazon Sword is an amazing plant that can grow up to 20 inches tall. Because of its height, it offers fish a good hiding spot. When planted at the back of a freshwater aquarium, it serves as an attractive backdrop. It needs medium light to really thrive.
2. Java Fern
The Java Fern makes a great choice for those just starting out with plants in their aquariums. This type of plant is super easy to care for and readily available, it only requires low-to-medium light, and it adds a brilliant touch of green to a tank. Java Ferns typically don’t root into the gravel and prefer to be attached to rock or wood, which can easily be done with black thread or thin fishing line. The same goes for Java Moss, which is another easy option.
3. Water Wisteria
Also known as Bunch Plants, Water Wisteria has tall leaves that look like lace. It’s a favorite among those who keep a lot of shrimp in their tank, as it has a sturdy root system and plenty of places for shrimp to explore. Water Wisteria needs very little care but does require fairly bright light.
4. Anubias
Anubias is a stunning and easy plant species to keep. Its beautiful, dark leaves in all shapes and sizes are great for beginners. All you have to do is tie it to rocks or driftwood and let it flourish. Anubias works well in community tanks and for those breeding fish, as it offers many great hiding spots. It requires low to moderate light and doesn’t need much attention or care.
5. Green Tiger Lotus
With its stunning wide leaves that reach out to the depths of a tank, the Green Tiger Lotus is an excellent decoration for an aquarium. It’s a type of lily and can come in various colors. Only requiring moderate light, this plant will offer your fish a nice hiding place closer to the water’s surface.
6. Pygmy Chain Sword
Pygmy Chain Sword is a low-growing, gravel-covering plant that has pointed, lovely green leaves. Known for tolerating a range of different aquarium conditions, Pygmy Chain Sword does well in a variety of water temperatures and pH levels. However, it flourishes with the right light and is a great plant for fish to hide in as well.
